REVIEWS.

(Of the album April Paves The Way)
A grand collection of traditional and self-penned Celtic songs and tunes. This CD is well produced and has a good time party feel to it. Paul's excellent voice accompanied by his solid musicianship keeps the whole thing rolling along in a fine style and the addition of Kieran Concannon on uillean pipes, George van Ristell on banjo and mandolin, Glenn on fiddle and Kelly Elliott adding vocals gives that authentic Irish experience to this hour long production.
Shut your eyes, use a little imagination and you could be sitting in a Dublin bar on any Saturday night. The album places traditional songs like 'Wild Colonial Boy' and pre-war songs such as 'Peat Bog Soldiers' alongside Paul's own songs. The title track 'April Paves The Way' is particularly good and the love song 'Happy Go Lucky' is appealing to those of us with a romantic nature.
As most of you will know, Paul and Glen have another stage persona when they become the hilarious Great Bonzo and Doris, their performance of the theme from the film 2001 (Also Zacht Zarathustra) utilising four clothes irons and an ironing board is just something to behold. But it becomes quite apparent from this CD, that like many other funny performers, there is a need to pursue an outlet for the more serious side to their work. April Paves The Way is an excellent attempt to reveal a depth of talent hitherto unknown to most of their fans and they should be congratulated for putting this work together. This, often, rousing CD has a passion and fire laced with humour and pathos. Lets hope this duo keep up the good work.
